Where Should I Camp? | The Go-To Spots for Your Overlanding Journey

If we’re being honest, a lot of overlander meetups center around gear and gadgets—tires, suspension, rooftop versus ground tents, solar setups, recovery kits. It’s all part of the journey. Funny enough, we don’t talk nearly enough about where to sleep!
When you’re miles from home—parked beside a whispering river, tucked into a quiet corner of the woods, or watching the sun go down in an explosion of color across the desert sky—where you camp matters. Whether you’re out for the weekend or chasing the horizon for days on end, a good campsite can make or break your trip.
We’ve put together a list of our favorite camping resources:

Hipcamp
It’s kind of like Airbnb for campers. You can find anything from open fields on private land to tucked-away spots in the woods with big views and quiet mornings. The app allows you to filter by region, amenities, and nearby water sources. Hipcamp is always a solid backup for busy weekends when public spots are packed.

Public Lands & Dispersed Camping
If you’ve got a self-sufficient setup, dispersed camping on national forest or BLM land is always a win—no fees, fewer crowds, and the kind of peace that’s increasingly harder to come by these days. Just be respectful: leave no trace, follow local rules, and pack out what you pack in.

Campgrounds
Sometimes, keeping it simple is the best bet. There are always trusty state parks, national parks, and Forest Service campgrounds. These are great options when you’ve got family or friends along—it can be a great way to go. Access to restrooms, water, and sometimes even showers are welcome amenities. Just don’t wait until the last minute to book, especially during peak season!
Remember, your rig can take you almost anywhere—but the right place to camp? That’s what turns a trip into a memory.
