Minimalist Overlanding: What You Actually Need to Hit the Trail
When most people picture overlanding, they imagine a state-of-the-art rig with rooftop tents, fridge systems more expensive than a first car, and enough gear to survive a zombie apocalypse and host brunch afterward.
But here’s the thing: if you don’t have all of that, you don’t necessarily need it to get out and explore. And even if you do have all of that, going lighter can offer a fresh experience.
On our latest trip, we tried something different. No extra stuff. Just the basics—a sleeping setup, simple cooking gear, recovery tools, and the clothes on our backs (which, by day three, probably could’ve walked themselves home. Seriously, take a few changes of clothes at least).
And honestly? It was one of the most freeing trips we’ve ever taken.
What happened when we took less?
Essentially? We moved faster. We set up camp quicker. We had fewer distractions. There was no rummaging through four plastic bins to find a coffee filter. Most importantly, we had more time to focus on the experience of being out there.
No distractions. No digging. Just us, the truck, and the trail. Present. Uncluttered. And weirdly enough, that simplicity made everything feel a little more... personal. Like we remembered what this was all supposed to be about in the first place.Three Tips for Traveling Lighter (Without Losing Your Mind)
- Go for gear that pulls double duty | A simple tarp can be a sunshade, a rain fly, a picnic blanket, or a questionable superhero cape (if things get dramatic).
- Pack for what will probably happen, not what might | Unless you’re really planning to deep-clean yourself in the woods, skip the solar shower and pack some baby wipes. Trust us.
- Do a quick review when you get home | What did you actually use? What never left the truck? That’s your cue for what matters and what doesn’t. You may find that you like traveling light.

Don’t Wait for “Perfect”
If you’ve been waiting for the perfect gear setup, the right moment, or that magical weekend when all your responsibilities vanish, this is your sign.
Go anyway. With whatever you’ve got. There’s beauty in making do. In simplifying. In realizing that you don’t have to bring everything to feel full out there.
