Turning a Road Warrior’s Truck into an Organized, Accessible Gear Hub
Aug 21, 2025
Professional precision rifle shooter Keith spends nearly two-thirds of the year on the road—about 200 days—competing at events for MDT across the country. With long days behind the wheel, countless matches, and a literal truckload of equipment, his rig needed a serious organizational overhaul.
When Keith stopped by the Blue Ridge Overland Gear shop, he had just installed a brand-new set of TruckVault drawers—still smelling like fresh materials—but the sheer amount of cases, boxes, and loose gear inside was begging for a system. The goal was simple: make it quick and easy for Keith to grab the right gear at a match, an event, or even during casual conversations on the range.
From Cardboard Boxes to Durable Totes
Cardboard boxes had been the go-to for overflow storage, but they’re no match for rain, rough roads, or repeated loading and unloading. The BROG team swapped them out for rugged tote bags that fit seamlessly inside the TruckVault drawers. The result: Keith could open a drawer, grab two handles, and move an entire kit without juggling multiple loose items.
Dividing the Drawers: Personal vs. Loaner Gear
Keith wanted a clear separation between his personal match gear—rifles, ammo, and competition essentials—and the loaner gear he brings for others. One drawer was dedicated to personal items, while the other became a home for loaner rifles, spare optics, and support gear. This division makes it easier to find exactly what’s needed without rummaging through everything.
Pouches, Panels, and Packing Cubes
The overhaul didn’t stop at the drawers. Utility pouches, mesh packing cubes, and MOLLE panels brought order to cold-weather gear, rain layers, and smaller accessories. Color-coded cubes with Velcro ID panels made it easy to identify contents at a glance.
Seat-back panels were installed for quick access items—perfect for long road trips when getting out of the cab isn’t ideal. Medium GP pouches, a headrest-mounted first aid kit, and a fire extinguisher pouch kept safety equipment within arm’s reach for anyone in the vehicle.
Maximizing Space and Accessibility
Before the rework, the top of Keith’s drawers was piled high, making it nearly impossible to reach items at the bottom. The new system not only cleared that space but also created an organized layout where every piece of gear had a designated home.
Now, instead of carrying duplicates “just in case,” Keith can see and access what he already has—saving space, weight, and time. The transformation turned his drawers from potential “junk drawers” into a streamlined, high-functioning mobile gear station.
Ready for the Next 200 Days on the Road
For someone spending 12–15 hours driving to matches and teaching events, organization isn’t just about neatness—it’s about efficiency and readiness. With this new setup, Keith can roll up to any event knowing exactly where his gear is, grab it in seconds, and keep moving.
The BROG team may have started with a truck full of gear, but they left Keith with something far more valuable: a system designed for the way he works, competes, and lives on the road.
