What is a skottle? Probably just about the most exciting thing we've seen around the Thread Shed for a while, that's what!
Pronounced skō til or skaw-Til, the skottle is a South African outdoor cooking utensil. Anything you can cook on a grill or skillet can be prepared in a skottle. And let me tell you, we came up with a damn good extensive list of what we'd like to cook in it around the shop. All of our stomachs were rumbling as we talked about making burgers, hashbrowns, or even the fixins' for fajitas in one of these. At the thread shed, we get excited about a lot of neat products, but this one involves food, so it's pretty close to the top of our list of awesome gear.
The TemboTusk Skottle is pre-seasoned, so you can start cooking immediately. It is designed to work with a 16 oz. Coleman style, single burner and gas bottle, which fits in a welded frame underneath the disc. With the right adaptor, a larger propane bottle could be used too. (The Coleman one-burner produces 10,000 BTUs of heat energy — more than enough for use with the Skottle).
Maintenance for the skottle is easy — to recondition it, use olive oil or any cooking oil. Heat it on a gas or charcoal barbeque to 450 degrees, or until the oil on the metal stops smoking. Just like your favorite Dutch oven or cast iron pan, the more frequently you use your skottle, the better the non-stick cooking surface becomes. The TemboTusk Skottle comes with a three-leg stand, which supports the burner frame and disc. The legs are removable and can be stored separately.
